Oracle databases play a critical role in many enterprises. Modern storage arrays can’t compete on price without a range of data reduction
technologies that help reduce the overall total cost of ownership of external
storage. Unfortunately, there is no one single data reduction technology that fits
all data types and we see savings being made with both data deduplication and
compression, depending on the workload. Typically, OLTP-type data (databases)
work well with compression and can achieve between 2:1 and 3:1 reduction,
depending on the data itself. Deduplication works well with large volumes of
repeated data like virtual machines or virtual desktops, where many instances or
images are based off a similar “gold” master.
Imagine the benefits that a VDI environment could realize during a boot storm. All the VMs are based on the same template, and therefore they all have the same set of files during initial boot. Normally, 100 VMs all booting at the same time would require a significant number of HDDs, but with this hyperconverged infrastructure platform, the first VM to boot reads the block off the HDD, which promotes that block into cache. Now the next 99 VMs can all access that same block from cache. That’s a 100:1 IOPS reduction on the IOPS-bound disks.
Datacenter improvements have thus far focused on cost reduction and point solutions. Server consolidation, cloud computing, virtualization, and the implementation of flash storage capabilities have all helped reduce server sprawl, along with associated staffing and facilities costs. Converged systems — which combine compute, storage, and networking into a single system — are particularly effective in enabling organizations to reduce operational and staff expenses. These software-defined systems require only limited human intervention. Code imbedded in the software configures hardware and automates many previously manual processes, thereby dramatically reducing instances of human error. Concurrently, these technologies have enabled businesses to make incremental improvements to customer engagement and service delivery processes and strategies.

Big data can be observed, in a real sense, by computers processing it and often by humans reviewing visualizations created from it. In the past, humans had to reduce the data, often using techniques of statistical sampling, to be able to make sense of it. Now, new big data processing techniques will help us make sense of it without traditional reduction.
