IT is in the midst of one of its major transformations. IDC has characterized this paradigm shift as the “third platform,” driven by innovations in cloud, big data, mobility and social technologies. Progressive enterprises are seeking to leverage third-platform technologies to create new business opportunities and competitive differentiation through new products and services, new business models and new ways of engaging customers.
Transportation companies are expected to solve logistical challenges, improve service, optimize costs and increase efficiencies. More and more, they are turning to new IoT technologies to help them achieve this.
In this guide, we’ve identified the latest location, routing and other data-driven services, that are helping commercial fleet management and logistics organizations differentiate and lead the way in an increasingly complex market.
The financial services industry has unique challenges that often prevent it from achieving its strategic goals. The keys to solving these issues are hidden in machine data—the largest category of big data—which is both untapped and full of potential.

This 10-point checklist outlines best practices for designing a security architecture that protects cloud data at the endpoint. Enterprise computing architectures have changed fundamentally in the last ten years, as employees consume an ever-growing collection of business cloud services through mobile apps. The traditional security approach of network perimeter and locked-down endpoints is not suitable for this app-to-cloud model of modern work.
Every financial services firm understands the importance of data. More is better. Sooner is better. Accessing it, understanding it, and taking advantage of it before the competition is better.
In the mid-2000s, Financial Services was the first industry to strongly adopt data virtualization as a disruptive, new technology for accessing and integrating more data, faster and more easily than ever before.
Buy and sell side groups at the largest institutions led the charge, followed soon after by risk management and compliance units. The leading mutual fund providers, along with hedge funds, led the next wave of adoption. In recent years, commercial banks and insurers have accelerated their use of data virtualization. And today, analyst firms such as Gartner, Inc. and Forrester project continued data virtualization adoption for both first-time use at new firms and expanded deployments at existing sites.

Today’s businesses generate staggering amounts of data, and learning to get the most value from that data is paramount to success. Just as Amazon Web Services (AWS) has transformed IT infrastructure to something that can be delivered on-demand, scalably, quickly, and cost-effectively, Amazon Redshift is doing the same for data warehousing and big data analytics.
Amazon Redshift offers a massively parallel columnar data store that can be spun up in just a few minutes to deal with billions of rows of data at a cost of just a few cents an hour. Organizations choose Amazon Redshift for its affordability, flexibility, and powerful feature set:
• Enterprise-class relational database query and management system
• Supports client connections with many types of applications, including business intelligence (BI), reporting, data, and analytics tools
• Execute analytic queries in order to retrieve, compare, and evaluate large amounts of data in multiple-stage operations
Consumers worldwide continue to adopt and use technology in their shopping experience.
Faced with rising customer expectations and increasing competitive pressures, retailers
now are prioritizing in-store innovation. Many retailers have adopted multichannel
implementations, in which mobile, web, and in-store shopping are enabled but not delivered
consistently to the customer. The next step in this evolution is an omnichannel strategy, now
being deployed by some retailers, which presents a consistent shopping experience across
mobile, web, and in-store channels. Omnichannel also enables retailers to integrate back-end
infrastructure technologies (e.g., servers, databases, etc.) and cloud-based services (e.g., loyalty
programs, personalized recommendations, inventory management, etc.) to improve many
aspects of store and enterprise operations.
An omnichannel strategy relies on several core and supporting technologies. The key factors in
evaluating any omnichannel-enabling solution includ
Many governments embrace mobile network operator (MNO) networks as partners in the quest to establish high-performance mobile broadband data capabilities supporting emergency services. The question is: Who is better placed to operate future mission-critical LTE networks, governments or MNOs?

There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.
In the financial services industry (FSI), high-performance compute infrastructure is not optional; it’s a prerequisite for survival. No other industry generates more data, and few face the combination of challenges that financial services does: a rapidly changing competitive landscape, a complex regulatory environment, tightening margin pressure, exponential data growth, and demanding performance service-level agreements (SLAs).

The ever-rising tide of demands on IT organizations is creating constant pressure on their leaders to upgrade or replace their outmoded legacy systems with new infrastructure technologies that will allow them to keep pace with the speed of business. It is no longer sufficient to manage basic business applications and resources such as ERP, email, and silos of heterogeneous data. The bar has been raised higher than ever, and the role of IT is evolving to meet it. As a result, IT must support applications and services that make it possible for the business to provide new, diverse customer experiences while generating expanding revenues via the emergent crown jewels of business: big data, cloud, and mobility.

To free up staff resources to focus on strategic business initiatives, many IT leaders are considering engaging a partner to handle ongoing data center maintenance and optimization. But, too often, data center management services fall short of expectations. Standard care services may be limited in scope, and may not support the range of legacy hardware already in the data center. Conversely, complex managed or outsourced services may involve a costly, fully-customized engagement, in which costs are unpredictable, and control is wrested away from the enterprise. Finally—and perhaps most importantly—many data center management service providers seem to lack the innovative spark that will ensure continuous improvement to data center operations.

Enterprises are looking to innovations like big data, cloud-based services and mobile apps to improve decision making and accelerate business results. But legacy IT implementations—independent compute, storage and networking platforms, veneered with a hypervisor— often can’t deliver on the increased agility, scalability and price performance demands of this new era of IT.
Big Data is not just a big buzzword. Government agencies have been collecting large amounts of data for some time and analyzing the data collected to one degree or another. Big data is a term that describes high volume, variety and velocity of information that inundates an organization on a regular basis. But it’s not the amount of data that’s important. It’s what organizations do with the data that matters. Big data can be analyzed for insights that lead to better decisions and better services.
