The Cisco 2016 Annual Security Report—which presents research, insights, and perspectives from Cisco Security Research—highlights the challenges that defenders face in detecting and blocking attackers who employ a rich and ever-changing arsenal of tools. The report also includes research from external experts, such as Level 3 Threat Research Labs, to help shed more light on current threat trends. We take a close look at data compiled by Cisco researchers to show changes over time, provide insights on what this data means, and explain how security professionals should respond to threats.

The traditional approach to cybersecurity has been to use a prevention-centric strategy focused on blocking attacks. While prevention-centric approaches do stop many threats, many of today’s advanced and motivated threat actors are circumventing these defenses with creative, stealthy, targeted, and persistent attacks that often go undetected for significant periods of time.

The benefits of addressing the image suppression issue are significant. A recent controlled study by SubscriberMail demonstrated the response improvements gained by optimizing an email message to have impact even when images are not displayed. In this study, an email message that was not optimized for image suppression was sent to a test panel of approximately 50,000 subscribers. Simultaneously, a panel of similar makeup received a version of the same message optimized for non-graphical display. Compared to the non-optimized version, the optimized version saw an 87 percent increase in clicks.

Most large organizations address network security with an army of tactical point tools like firewalls, VPN gateways, IDSs/IPSs, network proxies, malware sandboxes, web and e-mail gateways, etc. This messy array of independent technologies was adequate ten years ago, but now presents a plethora of operational, policy enforcement, and monitoring challenges. Worse yet, network security defenses are becoming less and less effective at blocking targeted and sophisticated threats and advanced malware attacks.

Zero-day attacks and advanced persistent threats have outstripped the capabilities of traditional security methods that rely exclusively on detection and blocking for protection. In fact, 100 percent of companies surveyed by Cisco, as part of our Annual Security Report, have connections to domains that are known to host malicious files or services. At the same time, the Internet of Everything (IoE) is accelerating, creating significant opportunities for businesses and attackers alike as more things come online - along with the people, processes, and data that interact with them.
